Lack of screens delayed Thanga Meengal: Director Ram

Ramsubramaniam's Tamil drama Thanga Meengal, which was originally scheduled to release July 26, has been pushed to a further date due to lack of screens. The director says he won't release the movie until he gets maximum number of theatres.

"The delay has been due to lack of screens. We can't expect a solo release nowadays, but my film deserves to get a good number of theatres for release. I won't release it until I get maximum number of screens for release," Ram told.

Two Tamil films Pattathu Yaanai and Sonnaa Puriyadhu released July 26, and both the projects opened to decent response at the box office.

Ram now hopes to release his film in August provided he gets screens amidst the rush of big-budget flicks such as Thalaiva, Chennai Express, Attarintiki Daaredhi and Yevadu.

"Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express will definitely have a big release in Tamil Nadu as well because it has a strong south Indian connection. In fact, one shouldn't be surprised if the makers plan a bigger release in the state vis-a-vis other south Indian states," trade analyst Trinath told.

"Today, it's very unlikely to get a solo release. Each week a minimum of two films in Tamil are hitting the screens, and it is likely to continue in the weeks to come," he added.

Seven Tamil films released in July, and of them only Singam 2, which managed to get a solo release on July 5, emerged as a box office winner.

Other films include Dhanush's Maryan and low-budget flicks such as Anba Azhaga, Kaadhale Ennai Kaadhali and Sathiram Perundhu Nilayam.

Ram's Thanga Meengal, which features him in the lead role, is based on a relationship between a father and his daughter. It highlights the importance of primary school education.
